Biarritz : a seaside resort ... very chic

Between the charm of the past and the surfing spirit

Biarritz, known as the surfing capital of France, is a stunning city located above sea level and facing the ocean. It offers a panoramic view of the littoral of Aquitaine.

 

Looking to the south, the Basque Coast unfolds its rocky coves to Spain, while the northern view showing a stretch of sandy beaches to Anglet, marking the beginning of the Landes.

 

Biarritz is a beautiful city to explore on foot along the boardwalk that crosses the steep coast from the Lighthouse, via the Grande Plage, the Port Vieux and the Rocher de la Vierge.

  

This town really took off as a glamorous seaside resort in the mid 19th Century and spent the Belle Epoque and Art Deco eras being lavished with attention and architecture.

Architecture in Biarritz is of a mixture of styles, with very different constructions. 

 

Many attractions are to be discovered in Biarritz, such as the Rocher de la Vierge, the Lighthouse, the Musée de la Mer Aquarium, the Cité de l'Océan Museum, the Port des pêcheurs, the Port Vieux beach ou the famous Municipal Casino ...with its Art Deco atmosphere and its panoramic ocean view. 

  • Le Musée de la Mer : the new itinary follows the Gulf Stream to discover the seabed from the Bay of Biscay to Indo-Pacific. In a giant pool of 1,500 m3, "Le Musée de la Mer" also has the only hammerhead sharks of France, and alongside thirty rays and sharks, offering a majestic ballet.
    A Caribbean lagoon and its mangrove transports you to the life of coral reefs: clown fish, anemones, moray eels ... A multitude of fish of original colours and shapes ... whirl under your eyes. Children will marvel at the seal tank on the terrace: there is a wonderful show every day at 10:30 am and 5pm .
  • La Cité de l'Océan is a must see to complete your visit at the Museum of the Sea. This science museum is dedicated to the discovery of the big blue secrets in a journey through different worlds.
